Lessons from the Ocean

Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good. - Genesis 1:9-10

1. Vast

The ocean is deeper than we can imagine and wider than we can see. There is no way to measure the ocean as researchers still have never reached the bottom. Just as the ocean is vast, God tells us that His love for us is immeasurable and His forgiveness uncomprehensible.

"Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me." (Psalm 139:7-10).
Who is a God like You, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in mercy. He will again have compassion on us, and will subdue our iniquities. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. (Micah 7:18-19).

2. Mysterious

It seems every few years, scientists discover a new creature that lives in a deeper part of the ocean. There are many mysteries with the ocean from sea creatures to the amazing waves, each part of the ocean has the fingerprint of God's masterwork. There is no way the ocean just happened, it was designed and created by a Great God. Just as we cannot know all of the mysteries of the ocean, we do not know the mysteries of God.

"O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions— This great and wide sea, in which are innumerable teeming things, living things both small and great. There the ships sail about; there is that Leviathan which You have made to play there."" (Psalm 104:24-26).
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. - Isaiah 55:8-9
In His [God's] hand are the deep places of the earth; the heights of the hills are His also. The sea is His, for He made it; and His hands formed the dry land. Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. (Psalm 95:4-6).

3. Peace

What is one of the first places that people go to for relaxation, stress-release, to refresh? The ocean. There is a calming effect the ocean provides us from the sound of the waves as they roar and flow in endlessly, the sound of seagulls flying overhead, the smell of the salty air that carries a freshness and peacefulness each breath, and the feel of the warm sun. The ocean is beautifully peaceful and gives us the refreshment we need to go back to our day-to-day lives and put forth a productive and energized effort. Just as the ocean gives us peace and relaxation, God's Word and presence fill us with a peace that passes all understanding and refreshment that renews our spirit.

You [God] who still the noise of the seas, the noise of their waves, and the tumult of the peoples. (Psalm 65:7).
These things I [Jesus] have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33
Lord, lift up the light of Your countenance upon us. You have put gladness in my heart, more than in the season that their grain and wine increased. I will both lie down in peace, and sleep; for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety. - Psalm 4:6b-8
